Bump, set, spike!

Volleyball originated in Holyoke Massachusetts, USA, when a man by the name of William G. Morgan who was a physical education director at the local YMCA, created an indoor game that he called Mintonette.  There could be any number of players and it was said to be less physically demanding than basketball or tennis. The game “stole” some of characteristics from tennis and handball by the way the players continue to volley the ball back and forth from each side of the court to the other, hence the name volleyball.

Volleyball is played today on a court of twelve players with six on each size, two players in the back on the left and right and two players in the front on both the left and right side, with two other players in the middle, one towards the back and the other in the front. The main objective of the game is to land the ball on the floor of the opposing team’s side of the court by bumping, setting, digging, and spiking the ball over the net. Another option would be to
Pass the ball to other players on the same team as you. The game starts with the person who is in the back right side of the court who “serves” the ball to the other side of the court. This can be done underhanded or overhanded, but either way you’ve got one shot and eight total seconds to do so. Once the volleyball is hit to your side of the court your team has three changes, or “hits”, rather to get the volleyball back to the other side of the court. The ideal pass would be a “bump”, which is a gentle pass using the wrists of both hands to the “setter” of the team who then lightly pushes the ball high up in the air for the “spiker” to slap over the net.
